WaSL Draws with Al-Jazira, Walid Defers Decisive Match to Zabeel
Al Wasl goalkeeper Mohammed Al Wali turned from penalty conceder to hero, saving a crucial spot kick to secure a 0-0 draw against Al Jazira in the first leg of their UAE Pro League Cup quarterfinal at Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium on Sunday.
The match offered little excitement for most of the 90 minutes, with both teams struggling to create clear scoring chances. But the game came alive in the 59th minute when Al Wali fouled Nikola Vukovic inside the penalty area, giving Al Jazira what looked like the perfect chance to break the deadlock.
Simon Panza stepped up to take the penalty for the home side, but Al Wali made up for his earlier mistake with a brilliant save to keep the scores level. The goalkeeper's heroics mean everything remains to play for in the second leg.
The return match is scheduled for January 30 at Al Wasl's Zabeel Stadium in Dubai. With no away goals rule in effect, both teams will see this as a fair result heading into the decisive second leg. Al Jazira will rue their missed opportunity from the penalty spot, while Al Wasl will be pleased to take a clean sheet back to their home ground.
The winner of this tie will advance to the semifinals of the competition, formerly known as the ADIB Cup. Both clubs will need to raise their performance levels significantly in the second leg if they want to provide fans with more entertaining football than what was on display in Abu Dhabi.
