Abu Dhabi's Autonomous Mobility Leadership Showcased at Drift X 2025
Abu Dhabi's "DriveX 2025" expo is becoming a global showcase for smart transportation and autonomous systems. The event brings together local and international companies to test cutting-edge vehicles on land, sea, and air – positioning the UAE capital as a major hub for sustainable transport innovation.
The expo runs as part of Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Week, where companies get hands-on experience with smart vehicles before they hit commercial markets. This practical approach gives businesses and governments a real look at what works and what doesn't.
Blue Gulf Group displayed their autonomous boat designed for marine surveillance and scientific research. "Our unmanned vessel shows how national innovation can deliver smart solutions while reducing human risk and achieving higher accuracy," said Biat Al Qabisi, the company's deputy general manager.
Ground vehicles are getting attention too. Steer E showcased their COREX land vehicle, built specifically for desert environments. Omar Hafa, operations manager, explained that the vehicle combines speed, safety, and precision for harsh terrain conditions.
But the real buzz centers around flying taxis. Archer Aviation plans to launch their "Archer Midnight" air taxi service in 2026, with manned trials starting in the first half of next year. The company is working with Abu Dhabi Aviation to make urban air travel a reality.
"DriveX provides a strategic platform for developing smart air taxis and allows us to showcase our technology to experts and decision-makers," said Taleb Al Hinai, Archer Aviation's general manager for the UAE.
Chinese company ARIDGE brought a ground vehicle that regular drivers can operate with standard licenses. It runs on 800-volt silicon carbide technology and can travel over 1,000 kilometers with a 6×6 drive system. They also displayed an electric vertical takeoff aircraft with six rotors and a 270-degree panoramic cabin.
WeRide demonstrated their "RoboTaxi GXR" equipped with smart sensors and advanced automated controls. The vehicle represents a commercial solution that combines safety with operational efficiency for urban transport.
"The RoboTaxi GXR represents a decisive step toward integrating modern technology into transport infrastructure," said Walid Al Ameri, WeRide's operations manager.
Local company Load announced progress on their hybrid aircraft "Heli," designed for heavy cargo logistics. The aircraft can carry up to 250 kg for distances up to 700 km at 180 km/hour. It features eight lift engines, an internal combustion engine, and can recharge during flight.
Load scheduled Heli's first test flight for Thursday in Al Ain city. The aircraft offers a modular cargo compartment that adapts to different types of goods, including refrigerated or specialized cargo.
"Heli represents a qualitative transformation in logistics, combining speed, reliability, and sustainability," said Rashid Al Manai, Load's CEO. The aircraft can operate in various environments and weather conditions, with applications including medical delivery, cargo transport, and marine logistics services.
The development timeline shows rapid progress – Load started feasibility studies in February 2024, tested miniature models in December, and now reached ground testing before the planned first flight.
These innovations support the UAE's 2031 Vision for smart cities and safe, efficient transportation. The expo demonstrates how Abu Dhabi is attracting global companies while fostering local innovation in autonomous systems.
