UAE Launches 'United in Anthem' Initiative, Inviting All Residents to Participate in National Anthem Ritual
The UAE is launching a nationwide initiative called "We Sing United" that invites everyone living in the country to perform the national anthem together on December 2nd at 11:00 AM. The campaign aims to create a shared moment of unity during National Day celebrations, with the anthem provided in both Arabic and English to include the country's diverse population.
Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced the initiative through his official X account. He posted: "On December 2, 11 AM... we sing the national anthem united 🇦🇪 #WeSingUnited #UnionDay."
The timing coincides with the UAE's National Day, which marks the formation of the federation in 1971. This year's celebration takes on added significance as the country continues to position itself as a global hub for business, tourism, and cultural exchange.
Here's what makes this initiative stand out: the UAE has translated its national anthem into English alongside the original Arabic version. This move reflects the country's recognition that over 80% of its population consists of expatriates from around the world. The initiative specifically targets "everyone who considers the UAE their home," rather than limiting participation to Emirati citizens.
The campaign encourages people across all seven emirates to participate simultaneously, creating what organizers hope will be a unified voice echoing through homes, streets, and cities nationwide. Participants can share their moments using the hashtag #WeSingUnited.
This approach mirrors similar unity initiatives seen in other multicultural societies, but the UAE's version is notable for its explicit inclusion of non-citizens. The country has been working to strengthen social cohesion as it builds its long-term economic strategy around attracting and retaining international talent.
For the UAE's leadership, this initiative serves multiple purposes. It reinforces national identity during a key celebration while acknowledging the reality of the country's demographics. The move also comes as the UAE continues expanding its soft power influence regionally and globally.
The government has made the official video available online and encourages people to practice beforehand so they can participate fully in what officials call "this national moment."
