H.H. Sheikh Nahyan Inaugurates the 3rd International Conference on a More Sustainable Future 2025
The UAE opened its third International Conference for a More Sustainable Future 2025 in Abu Dhabi, bringing together over 75 global experts to discuss how artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and other modern technologies can support sustainable development. The three-day conference, hosted by Abu Dhabi University, focuses on integrating nature, technology, and society to build resilient communities.
Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, inaugurated the conference at Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental. In his opening remarks, he emphasized that the UAE has been committed to sustainability since its founding in 1971 under Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's vision of improving human life quality.
"The UAE has become a global pioneer in protecting nature, developing education, supporting scientific research, and advancing technological innovation," Sheikh Nahyan said. He noted that President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan continues leading the country toward higher levels of social and economic prosperity.
The conference theme "Shaping the Future: Integration of Nature, Technology and Society" reflects the UAE's approach to viewing the world as an integrated system where nature, technology, and society work together. This aligns with the country's positioning as a global leader in AI and a hub for innovation.
Sheikh Nahyan outlined four key areas for discussion. First, ensuring high-quality university standards through sessions on university rankings and academic excellence. Second, promoting environmental sustainability through effective resource management, environmental protection, and renewable energy development. Third, examining how science and technology improve life quality, noting that the UAE has built much of its modern identity in the digital age. Fourth, addressing the social and ethical dimensions of innovation, asking how technology can create opportunities while promoting inclusivity and addressing ethical concerns.
The conference features 550 research papers from over 100 researchers worldwide. Professor Ghassan Awad, conference advisor and Abu Dhabi University director, said the university supports innovative ideas from researchers and adopts innovative projects from students, aligning with the UAE's commitment to sustainable development.
Dr. Amr Ezzat Salama, Secretary-General of the Association of Arab Universities, participated in a dialogue session highlighting the role of university leadership. He emphasized that universities must go beyond knowledge transfer to focus on innovation and creativity, especially in finding solutions to regional challenges.
The international participation includes representatives from leading universities and scientific institutions worldwide. Dr. Ali Saeed bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, Chairman of Abu Dhabi University's Board of Directors, noted that the conference translates the leadership's directives on establishing a sustainability culture and highlights the UAE's national initiatives that have created a model for legislation ensuring sustainability and environmental protection for future generations.
The UAE's approach to sustainability goes beyond rhetoric. The country has invested heavily in renewable energy projects, smart infrastructure, and AI development while maintaining cultural identity and heritage preservation. This conference demonstrates how the UAE balances economic, social, and environmental requirements while respecting different communities' needs.
The gathering brings together academic leaders, government officials, and researchers from inside and outside the UAE, reflecting Abu Dhabi University's distinguished position and leadership at local, regional, and international levels. The university maintains strategic partnerships with local, regional, and international institutions specializing in sustainability projects and future-oriented initiatives.
