Former UAE Cycling Federation President Osama Al-Shaafar Passes Away
Osama Ahmed Al Shaafar, a former member of the UAE's Federal National Council and president of the Asian Cycling Confederation, has died following an accident outside the country. His death marks the loss of one of cycling's most influential leaders in the Middle East and Asia.
Al Shaafar led the UAE Cycling Federation for eight years, a period that saw major growth in the sport across the Emirates. During his tenure, the country improved its international cycling results, hosted more prestigious events, and developed new talent programs that put UAE cycling on the global map.
After his success at the national level, Al Shaafar moved up to continental leadership as president of the Asian Cycling Confederation. In this role, he became one of the most recognizable figures in regional and international cycling circles, helping shape policies and competitions across Asia.
His leadership came at a time when Gulf countries were investing heavily in sports infrastructure and international sporting events. The UAE has been particularly active in hosting major cycling competitions, including stages of professional tours that attract world-class riders.
Al Shaafar's dual role in politics and sports administration was typical of how sports governance works in the UAE, where government officials often take leading positions in sporting federations. This structure has helped the country rapidly develop its sporting capabilities and international presence.
The cycling community in Asia will now need to find new leadership to continue the development programs and international relationships that Al Shaafar helped build during his time in charge.
