Etihad Airways Launches Flights to Kabul in December, Connecting Afghanistan to the World
Etihad Airways announced it will start flying to Kabul, Afghanistan on December 18, marking the airline's 31st new destination this year. The move reflects growing demand from Afghan communities worldwide and the UAE's expanding aviation reach into strategic markets.
The Abu Dhabi-based carrier will operate three weekly flights using Airbus A320 aircraft with 8 business class and 150 economy seats. Kabul joins Etihad's rapidly expanding network as part of the airline's push into Middle Eastern and South Asian markets.
This route targets the large Afghan diaspora scattered across Gulf countries, Australia, Europe, and the United States. Many Afghans relocated after the Taliban returned to power in 2021, creating sustained travel demand between Afghanistan and these regions.
The service also aims to boost trade and investment flows between the UAE and Afghanistan. Dubai and Abu Dhabi have historically served as key commercial hubs for Afghan businesses, and direct flights could strengthen these economic ties.
Etihad CEO Antonoaldo Neves said the flights will meet strong travel demand while reconnecting families and communities. The airline has seen passenger numbers jump over 80% since 2022 as travel rebounds from pandemic lows.
The timing comes as Afghanistan remains largely isolated from international aviation networks. Most major carriers suspended operations after the Taliban takeover, leaving limited flight options for travelers. Etihad's entry provides a significant new connection point through its Abu Dhabi hub.
For Etihad, the route fits its broader growth strategy. The airline targets 38 million annual passengers by 2030, up from current levels. Adding underserved destinations like Kabul helps fill aircraft while tapping into specific market demand that competitors have avoided.
