Egyptian FA Fines Zizo, Pizarro, Al Ahly & Zamalek Over Super Cup Clashes
Egypt's football federation hit Al Ahly and Zamalek players with fines after unsporting behavior during the Egyptian Super Cup ceremonies in the UAE. The punishments follow incidents where players ignored officials during the trophy presentation, highlighting ongoing tensions in Egyptian football's biggest rivalry.
Al Ahly won their fifth consecutive Egyptian Super Cup title on Sunday, beating rivals Zamalek 2-0 at Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. But the celebration was overshadowed by poor conduct from both sides.
The Egyptian Football Association's competitions committee fined Al Ahly's Ahmed Mostafa (Zizo) 50,000 Egyptian pounds (about $1,060) for breaking trophy ceremony protocol. Television footage showed Zizo deliberately ignoring Zamalek vice-president Hisham Nasr's handshake attempt during the medal presentation.
Zamalek's Juan Bezerra received the same fine amount for similar behavior. The Argentine player was caught on camera snubbing Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhi and other officials while collecting his runner-up medal.
Both clubs also faced financial penalties for their fans' inappropriate chanting. Zamalek got hit twice - 100,000 pounds for fan behavior during the final against Al Ahly, and another 100,000 pounds for similar incidents in their semifinal against Pyramids. Al Ahly received a 100,000 pound fine for their supporters' conduct in the final.
The committee also suspended Pyramids coach Krzysztof Jurtchitsh for one match and fined him 10,000 pounds after he was sent off for protesting during the third-place playoff against Ceramica Cleopatra.
These penalties reflect the federation's attempt to maintain standards in Egyptian football's most heated rivalry. The Al Ahly-Zamalek derby regularly produces intense emotions, but the governing body clearly wants to prevent that passion from spilling over into disrespectful behavior toward officials and ceremony protocols.
