UAE's Steadfast Commitment: Empowering the Lebanese People Through Enduring Support
The UAE has maintained a decades-long commitment to supporting Lebanon through multiple crises, from major infrastructure projects to humanitarian aid. This partnership reflects deep historical ties and demonstrates how regional cooperation can provide stability during turbulent times.
The relationship dates back to 1974 when Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan directed funding for Lebanon's Litani River project with $150 million. This marked the beginning of sustained UAE involvement in Lebanese development across infrastructure, education, and healthcare sectors.
Lebanese Tourism Minister Lara El-Khazen highlighted the strong foundation of trust between both nations. She noted that Lebanon appreciates the UAE's hosting of a significant Lebanese diaspora community. The current Lebanese government is pursuing economic recovery through financial and banking reforms while improving the business climate to attract investments.
Tourism plays a central role in Lebanon's reform vision. The ministry is working to enhance visitor experiences and expand sustainable tourism initiatives across the country year-round. This approach aims to revitalize different regions and create jobs for younger generations.
After southern Lebanon's liberation in 2000, the UAE launched a $50 million solidarity project to clear landmines in cooperation with the UN and Lebanese government. Three years later, facing Lebanon's economic crisis, the UAE subscribed to $300 million in treasury bonds following the Paris II conference decisions.
The 2006 conflict brought another major UAE initiative. The "UAE Project for Supporting and Reconstructing Lebanon" addressed war damage comprehensively. More recently, the UAE responded quickly to the Beirut port explosion with emergency humanitarian assistance.
Lebanese Agriculture Minister Nizar Hani emphasized the brotherly relations between both countries. He pointed out that thousands of Lebanese citizens live and work in the UAE. Lebanon's new economic plan focuses on productive sectors, particularly agriculture and industry, with emphasis on sustainable and climate-adapted farming practices.
The agriculture ministry is preparing a 10-year plan (2026-2035) based on scientific foundations. This reflects Lebanon's shift toward evidence-based policy making in key economic sectors.
In October 2024, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan launched the "UAE with You, Lebanon" campaign. Government institutions, private entities, and civil society participated in supporting Lebanese people during recent challenges.
For investors and regional observers, this relationship demonstrates how consistent bilateral support can maintain economic ties even during political instability. The UAE's approach combines immediate humanitarian response with long-term development projects, creating a model for regional cooperation that goes beyond traditional diplomatic relations.
