UAE's Sheikh Dhiyab Explores China's Maglev Train on State Visit
Sheikh Dhiyab bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development Affairs and Martyrs' Families, explored China's cutting-edge maglev train technology during his visit to Shanghai. The trip highlights the UAE's growing interest in advanced transportation systems as the country continues expanding its infrastructure capabilities.
Sheikh Dhiyab rode the Shanghai Maglev, currently the world's fastest commercial train. The magnetic levitation system reaches speeds of 431 kilometers per hour and covers 30 kilometers in just seven minutes, connecting Shanghai Pudong Airport to Longyang Road Station.
During his visit, Sheikh Dhiyab met with Chinese railway construction and operations officials to examine the latest high-speed rail technologies and operational practices. The discussions focused on real-world applications and performance data from China's extensive high-speed rail network.
The delegation toured the train station facilities, where they studied smart signaling systems and specialized infrastructure for high-speed lines. They also examined advanced passenger cars and digital safety systems designed for comfort and security at extreme speeds.
China operates the world's largest high-speed rail network, spanning over 40,000 kilometers. The technology has proven commercially viable, with millions of passengers using the system daily. For the UAE, which already operates regional rail projects and has ambitious transportation development plans, understanding these systems could inform future infrastructure decisions.
The visit included Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of Foreign Trade, Saeed bin Mubarak Al Hajeri, Minister of State, and Hussein Ibrahim Al Hammadi, UAE Ambassador to China. Their presence suggests the exploration goes beyond technical curiosity to potential strategic partnerships in transportation technology.
