UAE Emerges as a Global Air Traffic Connectivity Powerhouse
The UAE has become the only country in the world with three airports ranking internationally for air connectivity. Dubai International Airport climbed to 15th place globally and first regionally, while Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport took sixth place and Sharjah International Airport ranked tenth in the Middle East and Africa region, according to OAG international data.
Dubai International Airport moved up one spot from 16th place last year to claim the 15th position globally. Emirates airline handles 38% of all flights through the airport and flies to 280 destinations worldwide. The airport also leads the Middle East and Africa region for air connectivity.
At Zayed International Airport, Etihad Airways operates 57% of all flights, helping the facility secure sixth place regionally. Air Arabia dominates Sharjah International Airport with 75% of flights, placing it tenth in the regional rankings.
The UAE has consistently led Middle Eastern countries in scheduled flight seat capacity throughout 2025. In September, the country recorded 7.5 million seats compared to 7.1 million in September 2024, marking 5.5% growth. This gives the UAE a 20.3% share of the region's total seat capacity.
The broader Middle East region saw 37 million seats in September 2025, up 5.9% from the same month last year. Zayed International Airport specifically ranked fifth regionally with 1.48 million seats in September, growing 3.1% from 1.44 million seats the previous year.
These rankings reflect the UAE's strategic position as a global aviation hub. The country's airports serve as crucial connection points between Europe, Asia, and Africa, benefiting from geographic advantages and significant infrastructure investments over the past decades.
The aviation sector's performance in the first half of 2025 reinforces this growth trajectory. UAE airports welcomed 75.4 million passengers in the first six months of the year, compared to 71.7 million during the same period in 2024. This 5% increase demonstrates sustained demand for air travel through the Emirates.
For the aviation industry, these numbers signal the UAE's growing importance in global air traffic routing. Airlines and airports worldwide are watching how the Emirates continues to capture market share in international connectivity, particularly as travel patterns shift post-pandemic.
