Trump Reverses Most of Biden's Executive Orders, Shaking Up U.S. Policies
President Donald Trump announced he will cancel most executive orders issued by his predecessor Joe Biden, claiming 92% were signed using an "autopen" - an automatic signing device - rather than Biden's direct signature.
Trump made the announcement Friday on his Truth Social platform, stating that using the autopen is "not allowed unless specifically approved by the President of the United States." He called the practice illegal and referred to Biden as "the fraud Joe Biden" in his post.
The president didn't specify which documents he's targeting for cancellation. But he said he's now canceling "all executive orders and anything else that was not signed directly" by Biden, arguing that those who used the autopen did so illegally.
Here's the thing about autopens - they're actually pretty common in presidential operations. According to American media reports, presidents regularly use these devices to copy their signatures on routine documents. It's a standard practice that helps manage the huge volume of paperwork that crosses a president's desk.
But Republicans have been criticizing the Biden administration for what they see as excessive use of the autopen, sometimes allegedly without Biden's direct knowledge. This creates a political opening for Trump to challenge the legitimacy of his predecessor's actions.
The move signals Trump's broader strategy to quickly dismantle Biden-era policies. Executive orders are relatively easy to reverse since they don't require congressional approval - the same way they were created. But the legal argument about autopen signatures could face court challenges, since the practice has been used by presidents from both parties for decades.
For markets and policy watchers, this creates immediate uncertainty about which specific regulations and policies might disappear. Everything from environmental rules to immigration policies to federal agency guidance could be on the chopping block, depending on how broadly Trump applies this standard.
