Surge in Domestic Tourism Sweeps the Nation this Week
UAE hotels are seeing occupancy rates surge past 90% during the four-day Union Day holiday, as locals and residents book stays to celebrate the national occasion. Hotel managers across the country report strong domestic tourism demand, with properties launching special events and packages to mark the festivities.
Karim Gharbi, General Manager of The St. Regis Abu Dhabi, expects extremely high occupancy during the extended weekend. Guests are taking advantage of the long holiday to celebrate with their families, he says. The hotel's private beach and premium facilities make it an ideal spot for relaxation, especially with the pleasant weather and nearby cultural activities.
The timing works perfectly with major cultural openings. The Natural History Museum and Zayed National Museum are launching during this period, drawing families interested in cultural experiences. This creates a diverse mix of visitors - from UAE residents to local tourists and culture enthusiasts.
Saeed Tayyoun from InterContinental Abu Dhabi confirms the trend. "We're seeing high occupancy rates mainly from the local market, plus demand from international tourists since this is peak tourism season in the UAE," he says. The hotel expects to reach full capacity during the holiday.
At Fairmont Bab Al Bahr, Sales and Marketing Manager Radi Ali Baz reports near-full occupancy. The hotel benefits from events running from Union Day through the Formula 1 race weekend, attracting both local and international guests.
Dubai properties are experiencing similar demand. DoubleTree by Hilton Dubai Jumeirah Beach has passed 90% occupancy, according to General Manager Elif Yazoglu. The bookings come from Emirati families, residents, GCC visitors, and guests from across the Middle East. "Guests prefer short breaks and outdoor activities during this time of year," he explains.
The pattern reflects broader tourism trends in the UAE, where domestic travel has grown significantly. Hotels are responding with heritage shows, cultural events, and special dining experiences that celebrate Emirati traditions. The four-day holiday creates a perfect window for staycations, especially as the weather becomes more comfortable for outdoor activities.
Charles Clarke from HYDE Dubai notes the hotel's prime location in Business Bay offers stunning Burj Khalifa views, making it popular with local families and GCC visitors. The property combines art and comfort in its design, creating experiences that match the celebratory spirit of Union Day.
This domestic tourism boost comes at an important time for the hospitality sector. It bridges the gap between summer's lower occupancy and the busy winter season when international visitors typically flood the market. The strong local demand shows how national celebrations can drive significant economic activity within the tourism industry.
