Sharjah Police and Civil Defence Respond to Khor Fakkan House Fire Caused by Gas Leak
A house fire in Khorfakkan left a 52-year-old UAE citizen hospitalized with burns after sewer gas buildup caused an explosion and blaze in his home. Emergency teams from Sharjah Police and Civil Defense responded quickly to contain the fire, which highlights growing safety concerns about gas accumulation in residential drainage systems.
Emergency crews received the call at 6 AM when family members reported hearing a loud bang followed by flames spreading through their house. Police, firefighters, and paramedics rushed to the scene in the eastern city of Khorfakkan.
Initial investigations by Sharjah Civil Defense fire experts found that gas leaked from the home's internal sewage network. The buildup reached dangerous levels before igniting and setting parts of the house on fire.
This type of incident shows why regular maintenance matters. Sewer gases like methane can accumulate in poorly ventilated or damaged drainage systems. When these gases reach the right concentration and meet an ignition source, they explode.
Colonel Walid Al Yamahi, director of Eastern Region Police, used the incident to remind residents about basic safety steps. He stressed that homeowners should check their sewage systems regularly and keep them clean.
The injured man was taken to hospital for treatment. His current condition wasn't disclosed, but burns from gas explosions can be severe depending on proximity to the blast.
For property owners, this case underscores the importance of professional inspections. Gas leaks from sewage systems aren't always obvious until it's too late. Regular maintenance by qualified technicians can catch problems before they become dangerous.
The incident also shows how quickly emergency services in the UAE respond to crisis calls. The coordinated response between police, civil defense, and medical teams helped prevent what could have been a much worse outcome.
Al Yamahi emphasized that residents shouldn't try to handle gas-related maintenance themselves. Professional inspection and repair services exist specifically to prevent these accidents and protect lives and property.
