Prestigious Mohammed bin Zayed Scholarship Recipients Announced: Empowering Promising Students
NYU Abu Dhabi has selected 24 students from 154 applicants for its 2025-2026 Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Higher Education Scholarship program. This initiative has been preparing UAE university students for academic and professional success since 2008, targeting top performers from the country's three main public universities.
The program draws students from UAE University, Zayed University, and Higher Colleges of Technology. A selection committee of NYU Abu Dhabi faculty and local community leaders chose this year's cohort through a rigorous screening process.
Sheikh Maryam bint Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, co-chair of the program's steering committee, said the initiative serves as a platform for developing distinguished students across the UAE. The goal is to nurture future leaders by fostering creative thinking, leadership skills, and a passion for learning.
Students take advanced courses taught by NYU Abu Dhabi faculty whose research shapes global discussions in their fields. This year's curriculum includes "Lofty Ideas" with Global Distinguished Professor John Coughlin, focusing on religious and legal studies. Another course, "The Path to Climate Neutrality," is led by Environmental Studies Professor Sofia Kalantsakos and examines global climate debates and challenges.
The leadership development component includes "What Makes a Leader" with Professor Angela Megali, covering leadership theories and skill development. Students also take public speaking courses with Eric Dietrich and Peter Karagianakis, plus critical thinking and persuasive writing with academic Maliha Arif.
Beyond classroom learning, students access NYU Abu Dhabi's research centers and advanced facilities. They participate in cutting-edge research in sustainability, technology, and public policy, broadening their intellectual horizons and cultural understanding.
The program aligns with UAE strategic priorities by preparing students to tackle global challenges like climate change and the transition to renewable energy. Course content emphasizes ethical standards, cultural values, and sustainable development principles.
Since its launch, the program has supported 372 students. Of these, 170 have pursued graduate studies worldwide, including 68 at NYU's global campuses and 16 in doctoral programs. Graduates have gone on to influential careers in academia, government, and the private sector.
This scholarship program is one of two community education initiatives run by NYU Abu Dhabi. The other is a competitive summer academy that prepares Emirati high school students for their final years of secondary education.
The 24 new scholarship recipients come from diverse backgrounds and represent the next generation of UAE leaders. Their selection reflects the program's commitment to identifying students with strong academic performance, leadership potential, and a desire to contribute to their communities.
The program continues to play a central role in developing UAE talent, providing students with world-class education opportunities while keeping them connected to their national priorities and cultural values.
