Melania Trump's Heartfelt Plea: Ukrainian Children Reunited with Families After Her Message to Putin
First Lady Melania Trump announced she has opened direct communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin to secure the return of children caught up in the Ukraine crisis. Some children have already been reunited with their families, and more are expected to return soon.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Friday, Trump said "this effort is still ongoing." She confirmed that Putin responded to her letter earlier this year and that communication between them continues.
"I opened a channel for communication with President Putin regarding the care of these children," she explained. "Over the past months, both sides have participated in several meetings and informal communications."
Trump said her representative is working directly with Putin's team to ensure children are safely returned to their families. She pointed to eight children who were reunited with their families in the past 24 hours as proof the effort is working.
The initiative highlights how humanitarian issues can create unexpected diplomatic channels even during times of broader conflict. Thousands of Ukrainian children have been separated from their families since Russia's invasion began, with international organizations documenting cases of forced relocations and adoptions.
For families still searching for missing children, this direct line of communication could provide hope. But the broader challenge remains massive, with Ukrainian officials estimating that over 19,000 children have been taken to Russia or Russian-controlled territories since the war started.
