Liverpool Fans Criticize Mohamed Salah's Declining Form, Urge Retirement Consideration
Mohamed Salah faced harsh criticism from Liverpool fans after the team's 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, with supporters calling for the Egyptian star to be benched or even retire. The backlash centers on missed chances and what fans see as selfish play during a crucial Premier League match.
Liverpool suffered a heavy defeat at the Etihad Stadium, with Manchester City scoring through Erling Haaland in the 29th minute, Nico Gonzalez in the 48th, and Jeremy Doku in the 63rd. But it was Salah's performance that drew the most attention from frustrated fans.
The Egyptian forward missed two clear scoring opportunities after finding himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. What made matters worse for supporters was his decision not to pass to new teammate Florian Wirtz, denying the German midfielder a potential scoring chance.
Liverpool fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their frustration. Many argued that Salah has aged and should make way for Federico Chiesa on the bench. The criticism was direct and unforgiving.
"It's very difficult watching Mohamed Salah these days, but if you talk about him in any way, you'll be accused of being a fake fan," one supporter wrote.
Another was more blunt: "Salah should leave Liverpool at the end of the season. Is he finished? He's definitely our legend but it's over."
The harshest criticism came from fans questioning his future entirely. "Now, let's talk about Mohamed Salah. I think Liverpool fans don't love him anymore. He should retire after this season. He had a wonderful career backed by titles, but he's become old and weak now, and he's no longer the winger we used to admire. He should retire and preserve his legacy."
This represents a significant shift in fan sentiment toward a player who has been central to Liverpool's success in recent years. Salah's contract situation and performance level will likely become major talking points as the season progresses.
The criticism reflects broader concerns about Liverpool's attacking effectiveness and whether changes are needed to maintain their competitive edge in the Premier League.
