Google's Gemini AI Model Revolutionizes On-Field Performance
The UAE government has launched the world's first benchmark test to measure how well AI models understand Emirati culture, language, and values. Google's Gemini model won the competition, beating 10 other major AI systems in understanding local dialects, customs, and national identity.
The "AI in the Field" index tested 11 large language models through more than 400 questions and 5,200 responses. A specialized Emirati committee with experts from various government agencies evaluated which AI systems best grasped the country's cultural nuances.
After Gemini, the top five performers were ChatGPT-OpenAI GPT-4o, ChatGPT-OpenAI o1, Cohere, and Grok. The evaluation covered seven different dimensions of Emirati identity, from language and heritage to social values.
Omar Sultan Al Olama, UAE Minister of State for AI, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications, said the government prioritizes embedding national identity into modern technology. As digital transformation accelerates, he emphasized the need to ensure AI systems align with the country's authentic values.
This move reflects a broader trend where governments want AI to reflect local cultures rather than just Western perspectives. Most AI models are trained primarily on English content and Western cultural contexts, which can create gaps when serving diverse global populations.
For the AI industry, this signals that cultural competency will become a key differentiator. Companies developing AI models may need to invest more in region-specific training data and cultural understanding to compete in international markets.
The UAE's approach could influence other countries to create similar benchmarks. As AI becomes more integrated into government services, education, and daily life, ensuring these systems understand local contexts becomes crucial for effective implementation.
The initiative also serves the UAE's broader strategy to become a global AI hub while maintaining its cultural identity. By setting standards for culturally-aware AI, the country positions itself as a leader in responsible AI development that balances technological advancement with cultural preservation.
