Global Rail 2025: Expansive International Participation Kicks Off Today under Mansour bin Zayed's Patronage
Abu Dhabi is hosting the second Global Rail 2025 exhibition and conference starting today, bringing together over 24 ministers and 200 exhibitors from 14 sectors to discuss the future of sustainable transportation. The three-day event at ADNEC runs under the theme "Leading the Future of Transport and Enhancing Global Connectivity," with participants representing companies worth over $140 billion in annual revenue.
The UAE has positioned itself as a major player in global transportation infrastructure, launching a National Railway Program in 2021 with 50 billion dirhams in investments. Energy and Infrastructure Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei says this program will deliver economic and development benefits exceeding 200 billion dirhams while reducing carbon emissions by the UAE's centennial in 2071.
This year's event has grown significantly from its debut last year. More than 20,000 international visitors from 100 countries are expected to attend, with 70 companies participating for the first time. The expansion reflects growing global interest in rail and sustainable transport solutions as countries look to reduce emissions and improve connectivity.
The conference features both strategic and technical tracks across 55 discussion sessions. Topics include high-speed rail development, sustainable financing, artificial intelligence in transportation, and future city planning. International pavilions represent leading countries including the UK, Spain, Germany, South Korea, India, and Jordan.
Several specialized exhibitions run alongside the main event. An innovation platform showcases the latest transport technology solutions, while a financing pavilion connects project developers with funding institutions from eight banks and financial organizations. An international projects pavilion displays infrastructure plans and investment opportunities from eight countries including Afghanistan, Chad, Kenya, Uzbekistan, and Paraguay.
The Global Rail Innovation Award received 242 entries this year - three times more than the inaugural edition. Winners will receive a one million dirham grant to support their projects, positioning the event as an incubator for new ideas that could shape global transportation.
Abu Dhabi's growing role in sustainable transport innovation is evident through major local participation. The Abu Dhabi Centre for Projects and Infrastructure announced strategic sponsorship of the event, highlighting the emirate's vision for interconnected infrastructure that improves quality of life and supports economic diversification.
Sharjah's Roads and Transport Authority is also participating, showcasing smart solutions including AI-powered surveillance cameras on buses, passenger information screens, and an inter-city ticketing system developed with Ridango. These technologies demonstrate how regional authorities are integrating advanced solutions into public transport services.
The timing is significant for the rail industry globally. Countries worldwide are investing heavily in rail infrastructure as they seek alternatives to carbon-intensive transport modes. The UAE's National Railway Program aligns with the country's Net Zero 2050 initiative, offering a more sustainable and efficient alternative to road transport.
For investors and industry players, the event provides access to billion-dollar infrastructure projects and investment opportunities across multiple countries. The presence of high-level government officials and major corporate executives creates opportunities for deal-making and partnership formation that could influence transport development for years to come.
