The honor recognizes Altman's role in bringing AI from research labs to real-world applications that affect millions of people globally.
The ceremony took place at the university's Abu Dhabi campus, with ministers, senior officials, and university leadership in attendance. Sheikh Khaled congratulated Altman and said the recognition reflects his achievements in transforming how AI works in the real world on an unprecedented scale.
The Crown Prince noted that Altman's work aligns with the UAE's vision to lead in AI and innovation. The country wants to build a complete AI ecosystem designed to serve humanity and boost comprehensive growth.
Khaldoon Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of the university's board of trustees, said granting the first honorary doctorate shows the institution's growing status as a global center for AI excellence. He emphasized this fits with the UAE's goal to create positive global change through advanced technology.
University President Professor Eric Xing praised Altman's impact: "Sam Altman managed to reshape AI's role globally, transforming it from a research idea into a driving force for human progress."
Altman expressed his honor at receiving the degree from what he called a pioneering institution that puts AI at the heart of its educational and research mission. He said the UAE's ambitious vision for responsibly advancing AI aligns with OpenAI's mission to ensure everyone benefits from AI advantages on a broad scale.
The recognition comes as the UAE positions itself as a major player in the global AI race. The country has been investing heavily in AI infrastructure and education, competing with other nations to attract top talent and companies in the field. For OpenAI, the relationship with the UAE provides access to a region that's rapidly adopting AI technologies across government and business sectors.
