Egyptian President Bestows 'Order of the Nile' on Former US President Trump
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi awarded Donald Trump the Order of the Nile, Egypt's highest civilian honor, recognizing the US president's role in brokering the Gaza ceasefire agreement. The ceremony took place during Trump's visit to Sharm el-Sheikh, marking a significant diplomatic moment as Egypt positions itself as a key partner in Middle East peace efforts.
During their bilateral meeting at Sharm el-Sheikh airport, el-Sisi praised Trump's decisive role in reaching the ceasefire deal. "You are the only one capable of achieving peace in the region," the Egyptian leader told Trump, highlighting the personal diplomacy that helped end the latest round of Gaza violence.
The timing matters here. Egypt has long served as a mediator between Israel and Palestinian factions, but this public recognition of Trump suggests Cairo sees the US president as essential to any lasting regional stability. For Egypt, which shares a border with Gaza and has dealt with the spillover effects of multiple conflicts, a sustained ceasefire means reduced security pressures and potential economic benefits.
El-Sisi also announced Egypt's plans to host a Cairo conference on Gaza's early recovery and reconstruction in November 2025, with Trump's expected support. This signals Egypt's intent to play a central role in post-conflict Gaza, potentially opening new economic opportunities for Egyptian companies and workers in reconstruction efforts.
The Order of the Nile has been awarded to few foreign leaders, making this recognition particularly significant. It reflects Egypt's calculation that strong ties with Trump could benefit broader regional stability and Egypt's own strategic interests in Gaza's future.
