Dubai Ruler Meets Cycling Legend McLeod, 6-Time Tour de France Winner
Dubai's Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed met with world No. 2 golfer Rory McIlroy yesterday, as the Northern Irish star prepares for another shot at the DP World Tour Championship. McIlroy, who has dominated the "Race to Dubai" rankings six times, praised Dubai's ambitious vision to become one of the world's most active cities through the Dubai Fitness Challenge initiative.
Sheikh Hamdan congratulated McIlroy on his remarkable golf achievements, particularly his six victories in the Race to Dubai standings across 2012, 2014, 2015, 2022, 2023, and 2024. The Crown Prince wished him success in the upcoming championship, scheduled for November 13-16 in Dubai.
McIlroy expressed his gratitude for the encouraging words and confirmed his hopes of winning the tournament for a seventh time. He highlighted Dubai and the UAE's significant position in the golf world, noting how the emirate hosts major championships that attract the sport's biggest names.
"What sets the Dubai Fitness Challenge apart, in my view, is that it's not limited to professional athletes," McIlroy said during the meeting, which was attended by UAE Minister of State for AI, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications Omar Sultan Al Olama. "It focuses on building a community culture that encourages all members of society, regardless of their age or fitness levels, to participate, stay active, and improve their health."
The golfer praised Dubai's major sporting and community events, calling them a real source of inspiration. He said Sheikh Hamdan's interest in motivating the community and making Dubai one of the world's most active cities reflects an ambitious leadership vision that strengthens the city's distinguished position globally.
McIlroy, who has won four Dubai Desert Classic titles and three DP World Tour Championship crowns, also valued golf's prominent role within this year's Dubai Fitness Challenge activities. The championship represents one of the major global tournaments taking place during the challenge.
The meeting comes as McIlroy leads the Race to Dubai standings heading into the season finale. His consistent performance in Dubai-based tournaments has made him one of the emirate's most successful visiting athletes, with his seven potential victories highlighting the city's growing status as a premier golf destination.
Dubai's strategy of combining elite sports with community wellness initiatives appears to be resonating with international athletes. The Dubai Fitness Challenge, now in its latest edition, aims to get residents moving for 30 minutes daily for 30 days, creating a city-wide fitness movement that extends far beyond professional sports.
