Abu Dhabi to Host Thrilling International 3x3 Basketball Tournament in October
Abu Dhabi is bringing back elite 3x3 basketball this October, with 14 international teams competing for over $200,000 in prize money. The tournament, organized with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), marks another step in the UAE capital's push to become a major sports destination.
The FIBA 3x3 World Tour returns to Abu Dhabi on October 25-26, 2025, taking place near Marina Mall's south entrance. Teams from across the globe will compete, including Amsterdam, Mongolia's Ulaanbaatar squad, Germany's Basket Bonn, Bahrain's Al Saif, UAE's Al Ain, and Algeria's national team.
This isn't Abu Dhabi's first time hosting the event. The previous edition was successful enough that organizers decided to bring it back. Arif Al Awani, Secretary General of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said the tournament will strengthen Abu Dhabi's reputation as a global sports hub while delivering an exciting experience for players and fans.
The prize structure goes deep, rewarding teams from first through seventh place. There are also special awards for the best team that wins before the time limit and the top three-point shooter. This kind of prize distribution shows FIBA's commitment to making the event competitive at all levels.
3x3 basketball has grown rapidly since becoming an Olympic sport in Tokyo 2021. The format is faster and more intense than traditional basketball, with games lasting just 10 minutes or until one team scores 21 points. This makes it perfect for outdoor venues and creates more dramatic moments for spectators.
For Abu Dhabi, hosting international sports events fits into a broader strategy. The emirate has been building its sports portfolio with Formula 1, UFC fights, and major tennis tournaments. Basketball adds another layer to this approach, especially as the sport gains popularity across the Middle East.
The timing works well for international teams too. October offers ideal weather conditions in the UAE, and the location near Marina Mall makes it accessible for both participants and fans. The outdoor setting also aligns with 3x3 basketball's street-style origins.
