Abu Dhabi Investment Partners Collaborate with Evryhttps://www.evryhttps://www.vivetch to Produce Alternative Proteins
Abu Dhabi is making a major push into alternative proteins by partnering with two specialized companies to build a massive production facility. The Abu Dhabi Investment Office signed agreements with Every and Vivici to develop a complete alternative protein manufacturing system, positioning the emirate as a key player in global protein supply chains.
The partnership focuses on building an industrial facility capable of producing four million liters of alternative proteins annually. This move puts Abu Dhabi at the center of a rapidly growing market that reached $3.03 billion globally in 2024 and is expected to grow at 43.5% annually, hitting $54.04 billion by 2032.
Alternative proteins offer a sustainable option that can scale up much faster than traditional animal-based production methods. For investors and governments looking at food security, this represents a significant shift toward technologies that can meet growing global demand without the environmental costs of conventional livestock farming.
The facility will meet the highest food safety standards while complying with halal food requirements, making it suitable for both regional and international markets. But here's what makes this interesting - the plant is designed as an open industrial hub that can attract more alternative protein companies in future phases.
The agreement goes beyond just building a factory. It includes developing clear regulatory frameworks to streamline commercial approvals within the UAE and the broader region. The companies will also explore export opportunities through comprehensive economic partnership agreements, which could make Abu Dhabi a strategic gateway to fast-growing markets in Asia, Africa, and Europe.
This initiative falls under Abu Dhabi's Food and Water Security Development Hub, which aims to use advanced technology to tackle global food shortage challenges. The approach reflects a broader strategy to build an integrated, sustainable food system based on innovation.
"We're working with leading global companies in alternative protein production to establish Abu Dhabi as a regional and global destination for a new industry that provides high-quality food options, attracts investments, and creates quality jobs," said Fatima Al Dhaheri, director of the Food and Water Security Development Hub.
For the companies involved, Abu Dhabi offers unique advantages. Arturo Elizondo, CEO of Every, highlighted the emirate's innovation culture and supportive environment for deploying advanced biotechnology at scale. Stefan Van Sint Viet, CEO of Vivici, pointed to Abu Dhabi's combination of funding sources, expertise, and infrastructure that enables rapid growth while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
The partnership also includes collaboration with academic and research institutions to advance scientific research in biotechnology and food innovations. Training programs will be developed with local authorities to build national capabilities and facilitate global knowledge exchange, strengthening Abu Dhabi's position in both scientific research and commercial application of alternative proteins.
