Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Discusses Enhancing Bilateral Cooperation with Ethiopian PM at G20 Summit
Abu Dhabi's Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and coordinating on global development goals emerging from the summit.
The two leaders discussed ways to boost ties between the UAE and Ethiopia, while also reviewing key items on this year's G20 agenda. Both sides emphasized the need for continued coordination among different parties to ensure the summit's outcomes get implemented effectively.
This coordination matters because it directly supports achieving sustainable development goals worldwide. The G20 summit brings together the world's largest economies to tackle global challenges, and follow-through on commitments often determines whether initiatives succeed or fail.
The meeting comes as the UAE continues expanding its diplomatic and economic presence across Africa. Ethiopia, as Africa's second-most populous country and a major economy in the Horn of Africa, represents a significant partner for UAE investment and trade initiatives.
Several high-ranking UAE officials attended the meeting, including Investment Minister Mohammed Hassan Al Suwaidi, Abu Dhabi Executive Council Secretary-General Saif Saeed Ghobash, and Abu Dhabi Media Office President Maryam Eid Al Mheiri. Their presence signals the importance both countries place on strengthening economic and strategic ties.
The G20 summit in Johannesburg marked a key moment for African nations to engage with major global economies on development priorities. For countries like Ethiopia and the UAE, these multilateral forums provide opportunities to build partnerships that extend beyond the summit itself.
